Robbie Sigona’s Produce Tips: Pomegranates

When pomegranates ripen, they actually “square” up slightly, as shown here.

Choose pomegranates that are…

  • Red in color
  • Heavy for their size
  • Nice and healthy looking with a shine to them, as opposed to dull looking

Also…

  • When pomegranates ripen, they actually “square” up slightly (see the picture)
  • Store at room temp if you are eating soon; store in refrigeration for a longer life.
  • Some are more red than others – this has to do with the amount of sun that the fruit gets. The outer part of the tree gets more sun and therefore produces better color.

Watch our video on YouTube for a tips on an easy way to remove the arils (seeds) from a pomegranate.

Robbie Sigona is our produce buyer. He works with local farmers and scours the market for the very best in fresh fruits and vegetables – some of you won’t find anywhere else.
